 INTRODUCTION        
 
          Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation. This rise in average temperature has brought about many climate problems: "An increase in global temperatures can in turn cause other changes, including sea level rise, and changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation. There may also be increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, though it is difficult to connect specific events to global warming. Other consequences may include changes in agricultural yields, glacier retreat, reduced summer streamflows, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors." Global Warming comes mainly through pollution.                                                                                               
                                                                       
          Factories exibit numerous amounts of smoke, that emit Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere. With the expansion of technology, more pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, receive a large increase (see data above). Due to the increase of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere, precipitation is affected, and health concerns arise. Not only do Factories exibit pollutants into the atmosphere, vehicles, etc. also contribute. The only way Carbon Dioxide exits the atmosphere is with the help of trees.

 

          Unfortunately, the cutting down of trees (aka deforestation) causes the number of trees abosorbing Carbon Dioxide to decrease. An effect of Global Warming called the Greenhouse Effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by atmospheric gases warms a planet's atmosphere and surface."...the anthropogenic emissions are predominantly due to land-use change, especially deforestation."

 

          Due to pollution, Global Warming is undergoing an increase, and the deforestation chips into an increase of the Greenhouse Effect. Increased Carbon Dioxide cause a dramtic drop in Oxygen levels - which can eliminate species in no time at all.

Mitigation is the gradual elimination of pollution-causing items.

Few examples include:

  • ethanol cars 
  • the introduction of a pollution cap (only a few tons allowed per industry).

 

Outlined Below are the Costs and Benefits of MITIGATION.

 




 
COSTS
 
  • Money : It will take a lot of money to buy an ethanol car, or for businesses to use cleaner gas/production methods.

 

  • Production Efficiency: Mitigation may cost a country / business a worse production efficiency style. With cleaner methods, and technology for cleaner methods still rising, the country or business may take a hit in production.

 

  • Loss of Supply: Since deforestation is a cause of Global Warming, items such as paper may see movement down a supply curve.

 

~ Granted there are benefits to mitigation, but money is the most important issue for a consumer or a business.

 
 
BENEFITS
 
  • Health: Mitigation can reduce the global warming effects, thus reducing the concern for health. Species' will not go extinct and the earth will be around with winter, fall, spring and summer. Trees reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions in the air, and send out cleaner oxygen for everyone to breathe.
  • Safety: With changing climates, the random occurances of tornadoes, hurricanes, typhoons and tsunami's can all be reduced.
  • Money: Believe it or not, money can be a benefit of mitigation. Although it will not overcome the loss of money due to mitigation, taxes for environmental care will be reduced if the environment is already clean and pollutant free.

 

~ Money is the only large cost mitigation brings to the table, but still, the benefits of mitigation seem to out-weigh its costs.
